And apparently there was no better target for teasing with said games than Byron. Vel had a clever way with them: finding itchy patches of molt and helping scratch them, joining in their games despite the difference in body plan. The wyrmlings themselves would likely be more distressed. She cared for them, in much the same way she did for erring wyrmlings: with a firm understanding that cunning and brave and endearing as they were, they were also small, delicate creatures with a good chance of not making it to full adulthood. She could admit, in her heart of hearts, she would be a little sorry about the deaths of the two princes. And a human war would mean opportunities to snatch livestock in the chaos without their involvement being noted. They would be fools to involve the Great Desert Colony. She did not care if humans wanted to kill each other. Provided the parts came from dead dragons (or were discards, such as sheds), Sheva was not particularly concerned with what they were used for. That could hardly be the assumption drawn from their avid interest in dragon body parts. And the fact that Odan was more peaceful towards the Great Desert Colony by no means meant that they were peaceful in general. The abruptly improving weather of the past few months couldn’t cure the resulting poverty and famine all at once. Several years of intense drought had ravaged the once prosperous Asora and soured their already fractious relationship with their northern neighbor. She often found it ironic that Prince Byron, who seemed more comfortable in his uniform than most other clothing and disliked being without his arming sword, was the tribute-envoy of their more peaceful neighbor, Odan, while tranquil Vel’s perennially hostile Asora sought a military alliance with the colony. At least not without risking tiresome complaints from their respective principalities. Unfortunately, unlike misbehaving wyrmlings, she couldn’t nip the erring royals to discipline them. Prince Vel conspicuously ignoring the Odanese prince only served to provoke him further. One would think that being the only two humans in a colony of venomous predators with heads half the length of their bodies might give the two young royals something in common and build some sense of camaraderie, but Vel and Byron seemed able to argue about anything. They smelled too much like food, as well as too much in general, and they bickered like hungry wyrmlings without the excuse of age or hunger to justify it. © Copyright 2019 | Event Horizon Ltd.Sheva was not feeling particularly charitable towards adolescent humans at the moment.
